Let’s Talk. Let’s Eat. Let’s Win.
“As brothers in the fight for equality, I extend the hand of fellowship and good will and wish continuing success to you and your members. The fight for equality must be fought on many fronts–in the urban slums, in the sweat shops of the factories and fields. Our separate struggles are really one–a struggle for freedom, for dignity and for humanity.” – Martin Luther King, Jr to Cesar Chavez on the importance of Black and Brown unity.
The #BlackAndBrownGetDown was created to honor and build on the existing work of the Black Panther Party, the Brown Berets, the Young Lords, and many more who worked tirelessly to cultivate a strong political and cultural identity for Black and Brown people. To both honor our humanity, our history, and to combat white supremacy. It was created as a space for Black and Brown people to get to know each other, to be in deep community with each other, and to find issues that impact both communities where an agenda can be set so we can win on the things that impact us most.
Historically, the dinner table is where transformative discussions and reflections have happened, but in our busy lives that doesn’t happen as often as it used to. The #BlackAndBrownGetDown is a dinner amongst neighbors to foster intimate conversations on ways to join communities together by sharing experiences and coming to understand one another. What better way to create relationships than through breaking bread? Without conversations, community needs cannot be identified, opportunities for success cannot be created, and the barriers that keep us from building coalitions with one another cannot be broken.
Come eat, honor and celebrate our people through art and dance, and join your neighbors in creating a shared story. Be the change that our community needs to win big.
